Staring at the creature in the small cage at the shelter, Brain
Gallagher—six-foot-tall,254 pounds—knew he'd met his match. The dog's black eyes stared back fearlessly and challengingly.
“You don't want this one,”a salesman said, “nothing but
trouble.”
“I'm a policeman,” Gallagher shot back. “Trouble's my
business. ”
“Yeah, well, this dog was leading a pack that was running wild.
Nobody wants him. ” The salesman pointed at a door to the room
where animals are put to sleep.
Gallagher looked at the card taped to the cage“ King”. The dog
barked
and the hair stood out around his neck, making his large head appear even bigger.
Gallagher took a towel from a paper bag, rolled it, and waved it
slowly in front of the cage. King's eyes watched the towel. When
Gallagher held it closer, the dog put his powerful jaws on the
heavy wire bar.
“Told you,” said the salesman, “too wild.”
“Unlock it,” Gallagher said.
“You kidding?”
“Go ahead. He'll be okay. ”
The salesman shook his head, unlocked the cage and quickly
stepped back.
“Okay, boy,” Gallagher said softly, slowly opening the cage.
Carefully he held out his hand. The dog smelled. Then he offered the
rolled towel. At once, King caught it. Seconds later, the towel was
torn into pieces. Gallagher moved back, allowing King out of the
cage.
King jumped out. His eyes passed over the frightened salesman
and focused on Gallagher, who threw another towel down 60-foot
hall. King was off like a rocket. Half way down, he started running on
the floor wildly. His backside crashed against the far wall. But he
had the towel, which he raced back to Gallagher. “ He's got real
spirit,” thought Gallagher as the two played tug of war (拔河). Then he tried to pull King back into the cage by pulling the towel
hard. Immediately, King bit his forearm.
“Okay, you will,” Gallagher said in a soft voice. “You don't
like to be told what to do. Neither do I. ”Slowly he reached for the
towel with his free hand and threw it into the cage, as if to say,
“don't try that again. ”
King set Gallagher's arm free and ran into his cage.
“I'll be back to pick him up,” Gallagher told the wide-eyed
salesman.
16. Nobody wanted King because ________.
A. he was too old to work for people
B. he was too wild to be raised as a pet
C. he had the habit to eat expensive food
D. only the policeman was suitable to raise him 答案與解析:B 細節理解題。依據銷售人員的話“...this dog was leading a pack that was running wild. Nobody wants him.” 17. The dog made his head look larger by letting his hair stand out
as if to ________. A. scare people
B. attract people's attention C. show his cleverness
依據“The dog barked and the hair stood out around his neck, making his large head appear even bigger.” 18. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The salesman rushed out of the room as soon as Gallagher
opened the cage.
B. The salesman understood the dog better than Gallagher.
C. Gallagher understood the dog better than the salesman.
D. Gallagher just wanted to frighten the salesman. 依據“The salesman...unlocked the cage and quickly stepped back.” 19. Gallagher managed to let the dog free his arm by________.
A. beating the dog hard
B. begging the dog to let him go
C. throwing the towel into the cage
D. asking for help from the salesman Ⅲ.七選五

Parents and doctors have the same worry over especially low birthweight newborns.
__20__ A trend has therefore developed to make special formulas(配方)of extra nutrients and protein-rich foods for these tiny babies.Unfortunately, a British study has found that this practice could have negative long term effects, such as high blood pressure in adulthood.
Between 1993 and 1995,Atul Singhal of the Institute of Child Health and his colleagues researched 299 full-term newborns, each of whom weighed very little for their age. The babies' moms had decided not to breastfeed
__21__
The rest received a formula with more nutrients and 28 percent more protein than the standard formula. The growth of all of these children was compared to that of 175 similarly low birthweight babies whose mothers had chosen to breastfeed their children for their first 9 months.
__22__ They found 83 babies from the normal-formula group, 70 babies from the extra-formula group, and 95 babies from the breast fed group.
__23__
According to the latest data, children who had received the extra formula had significantly higher blood pressures than those in the other two groups.
Seven human test have indeed shown that when infants are overfed before being stopped breastfeeding, they have an increased possibility to become fat as youngsters.
No matter how big a child is at birth, he or she will probably reach the same adult height no matter how quickly the baby grows. But reaching one's adult size at a slow-to-moderate speed may have a lot of benefits, as Singhal says.

1. There are certainly no signs that Charles was a rich man! There's no doubt who was responsible for this outrage. He refused to help me, despite the fact that I asked him several times.
[解題警示] 有時可用namely(即),that is to say(也就是說),in other words(換句話說),that is(那就是),i.e.(=that is),for example(例如)等引出同位語,補充說明其前面的名詞(或代詞)的內容。 He told us the good news, namely, the museum is open to all. There is only one way of improving your English, that is, to practise more.

B. no;don't C. not;haven't

In fact, it is you who have the most important role to play in stopping Yellow River erosion. [解題警示] 強調句型小結: ①基本構成It is/was+被強調部分+that/who... (What/Which/Who/When/Where/How/Why)+is/was it+that...? How was it that he finished the work so soon? It is/was not until...that... It was not until his father returned from the work that the boy began to do his homework.
