Playing Popeye
The man who played Popeye sponged off the dirt from another hard days work at the studio. He was really sick of spinach, but that was his specialty and what the spectators demanded. And he always sparkled when the crowd was happy. Who cares if they didn’t know that the spinach was rich with spices and tasted more like spaghetti than a vegetable. His spectacle pleased them and they bought enough souvenirs to keep him from spiraling out of business. His business was good and soon to be solvent.
He splashed more water on to the sponge and kept washing as much for the soothing effect as to be clean. His bathroom was large and spacious with the full spectrum of colors lining the walls. Those were the spatial specifications he had given the designers when it was built and that was how he liked it. In his bathroom he was sovereign just as he was king when he played Popeye.
But what would he do next? He wouldn’t be able to keep being Popeye for long! He was getting bored. Maybe he could play a caveman next and spear apples from over people’s heads! That would please the crowd! But then he thought that not many people would have the spine to let a stranger throw a pointed stick at their head. Nah, he’d have to think of something else. He would stay Popeye for a little longer. And with that thought he turned of the water and stepped out of the shower into his colorful bathroom. Now what should I eat other than spinach? He thought.
